About the Sopwith Camel- WWI British Fighter Biplane:
The Sopwith Camel is one of the most famous fighter aircraft of World War I, not only due to its battlefield performance, but also through its prevalence in pop culture. Debuting in 1917, the Camel was a single-seat biplane equipped with twin synchronized Vickers machine guns and powered by a 130 hp Clerget rotary engine. Despite its short nose and compact frame, it was a beast in the skies: agile, fast, and deadly in the hands of an experienced pilot. Indeed, pilots flying Camels claimed over 1,200 victories, more than any other fighter aircraft of the war.
With most of its weight in the nose and strong torque from the rotary engine that could spin the fighter to the right, the Sopwith Camel was notoriously difficult to fly. However, once tamed, it was a formidable dogfighter. In 1918, it was critical to regaining Allied air superiority over the Western Front. Many Camels also served in home defense of the British Isles, particularly as night fighters, where they were fitted with lights and proved deadly. By the end of 1918, new German fighters outclassed the Camel, but the fighter converted to a ground attack role, and although suffering high losses, they proved vital to containing German offensives. After the war, a heroic Beagle perched on a red doghouse imagined himself flying the Camel against the Red Baron, vaulting the Sopwith Camel to stardom.
