About the M551 Sheridan Tank:

Introduced in the late 1960s, the distinctive M551 Sheridan was designed as a lightweight, airborne tank that could parachute into combat. With aluminum armor to reduce weight, the tank nevertheless carried a powerful 152mm gun-launcher, an innovative weapon capable of firing conventional munitions or the Shillelagh guided missile. The Sheridan was a revolutionary weapon, but it was tested by the harsh and difficult conditions of the Vietnam War.

Boasting speed, mobility, and devastating firepower, the Sheridan could navigate muddy jungle terrain, narrow roads, and rice paddies. Its massive gun proved extremely effective against hidden enemy positions, capable of blasting dense vegetation and shocking enemy forces.

However, the thin armor left the tank vulnerable to mines and rocket grenades, and the sophisticated missile system was unreliable in the Vietnam climate. Crews modified their tanks, removing unnecessary equipment and adding protection and conventional weapons such as additional machine guns. Despite its drawbacks, the Sheridan was a respected weapon, giving U.S. forces aggressive firepower and versatility.
