The DShK was the Soviet Union's main heavy machine gun during World War II, firing a 12.7mm cartridge comparable to the Browning M2 .50 caliber. The gun was mass produced starting in 1938 and was issued to Soviet infantry units on a wheeled mounting equipped with armor plate shield. This mount encorporated a tripod base that allowed the weapon to be coverted to anti-aircraft use, after removing the wheels and the shield. A modernized version (DShM) is still in use today and can be seen on a variety of Russian armored vehicles.
