The BMP-1 was the Soviet Unions first fully tracked infantry fighting vehicle to see widespread use. Developed in the 1960, it was designed to carry troops into battlefields while offering protection against potentical chemical, nuclear or biological contaminents. It carried a crew of three (driver, commander and gunner) plus eight fully equipped combat troops in the rear passenger compartment.The BMP's turret is armed with a smooth bore 73mm low-velocity, semi-automatic cannon and was also equipped with a rail-launcher for the Malyutka ant-tank guided missile. More than 20,000 BMPs have been produced and are still in service in Russia, the former Soviet republics and various client states.
