About the Winter Tiger I – WWII German Heavy Tank:
The Tiger I rumbled onto the battlefield in 1942 and became known as one of the most fearsome and formidable vehicles of the conflict. Designed to overcome the heaviest Soviet and British tanks, the Tiger I featured sloped armor as thick as 100mm and carried the monstrous 88mm KwK 36 gun. However, at 57 tons, it had a slow top speed of less than 25 mph, and it was prone to breakdowns, fuel shortages, and maintenance problems. Nevertheless, the Tiger I fought extensively in key battles, such as the Battle of Kursk, where it became a symbol of German military might and prowess. The Tiger debuted in late summer 1942 on the Eastern Front. Outside Leningrad, a platoon of Tiger Is rushed into battle, operating mostly in swamps and forests. A heavy battalion of Tiger Is also deployed outside Stalingrad, participating in the German defense after the city fell. They arrived as summer turned to winter, and these early war tanks had to transition to the changing environment. The crews quickly painted over the standard dunkelgrau, covering their Tigers with hasty winter camouflage of white chalk and paint.
