Did you know that three out of four American GIs in the Vietnam War were volunteers, while the other one in four were draftees? Air mobility meant more time in combat for American soldiers in Vietnam, with infantrymen serving an average of 240 days in combat each year, compared to just 40 days for World War II. The casualty rate (killed or wounded in combat) was roughly one in ten for soldiers in the Vietnam War (304 killed or wounded out of 2.7 million that served). While the majority of American soldiers in the Vietnam War came from blue collar and working class backgrounds, they were also some of the most educated soldiers the US Army sent into combat, with 79% being high school graduates or better. The American Soldiers in were intrepid fighters that were doggedly resilient, skillfully improvisational, and deadly warriors and represented the best and brightest of our their generation of Americans. The combat infantrymen, the "boots on the ground" shouldered much of the burden of fighting, serving with great honor, under otherwise less-than-ideal conditions.
