About the Desert Air Force Tomahawk MkIIb:
Wresting control of the air from German Me 109s and Italian C.202 Folgores, the Tomahawks of the Desert Air Force helped the Allies secure victory in North Africa, particularly in the early years of the desert campaign. As the German Deutsche Afrika Korp (DAK) and Italian forces drove British and Commonwealth troops back toward Egypt, the United States, before formally entering the war, sent Curtiss P-40 fighters to help blunt the devastating effects of Axis airpower over the Mediterranean.
Originally designated the Tomahawk, and later models (from P-40E onwards) as Kittyhawk by the British and Commonwealth forces, it became one of the most widely used Allied aircraft of the Second World War.
The Tomahawk combined rugged construction with dependable performance, making it well suited to harsh operating conditions. Most Tomahawks carried six .50 caliber machine guns in the wings, with the ability to carry up to 1,000 lbs of bombs, enabling it to perform both fighter and fighter-bomber missions. Although it lacked the high-altitude performance of later aircraft, its strength, firepower, and diving speed earned the Tomahawk a formidable reputation
Flying from rough desert airstrips in Egypt, Libya, and Tunisia, the Desert Air Force’s Tomahawks performed escort duties, ground attacks, armed reconnaissance, and close air support for the Eighth Army. Its ability to withstand battle damage and operate reliably in dusty, extreme conditions made it especially valuable in the Western Desert.
As Allied air superiority improved, the Tomahawk increasingly shifted from air-to-air combat to attacking enemy transport, armour, artillery, and supply columns, playing an important role in disrupting Axis operations and contributing to Allied victory. Squadrons and aces became legendary, and painted distinctive shark mouths or, like some Australian pilots, a boxing kangaroo on their fuselages.
