About the Tiger Ausf. E - WWII German Heavy Tank:

Appearing on the battlefield in 1942, the Tiger I’s massive silhouette, thick armour, and devastating 88mm gun gave Allied tanks a formidable new opponent. Few tanks have inspired the mixture of fear, fascination, and debate, both during and since the Second World War.

The Tiger I’s famous gun could destroy almost any enemy tank at long range, and 100mm thick armor provided excellent protection. However, the Tiger I weighed almost 60 tons, and it was mechanically complicated, expensive to manufacture, and demanding to maintain. Only about 1,350 were produced between 1942 and 1944: the tank was powerful, but severely outnumbered by the mass-produced American Sherman or Soviet T-34.

By the late war, the Tiger I remained dangerous but faced increasingly difficult conditions. Tiger Is fought in Normandy, Italy, and the Eastern Front, often serving in independent heavy tank battalions deployed to important sectors. Experienced crews could exploit the Tiger’s excellent gun and armour from defensive positions, striking fear in and inflicting significant losses on the advancing Allies.

But as Germany’s strategic situation worsened, so did the Tiger I’s weaknesses. Fuel shortages, mechanical breakdowns, damaged bridges, relatively slow speeds, Allied air superiority, and the difficulty of recovering the heavy tank increasingly limited its effectiveness. Germany shifted production in August 1944 to the newer Tiger II, but Tiger Is continued fighting into 1945, making the tank an imposing but increasingly rare presence during the final battles of the war.
