About the Taxi de la Marne - Type AG Carriage:

In September 1914, the German armies surged toward Paris, and a fleet of taxis drove to meet them. This unlikely fleet, dubbed the Taxis of the Marne, responded to the threat against the French capital and rushed troops to the front. Rather than wait for slow troop trains, military governor Joseph Gallieni improvised and commandeered hundreds of Parisian taxis. The Gendarmerie scoured Paris for taxis, herded them to Les Invalides in central Paris. On the night of September 6, about 600 taxis began ferrying roughly 5,000 soldiers from the city to the battle lines along the Marne.

The scene was surreal. Civilians watched as cabdrivers, still in their caps, lined up beneath streetlamps, engines idling and their meters ticking. Soldiers climbed into the back seats with rifles between their knees, rolling past familiar boulevards toward the thunder of artillery. It wasn’t a massive logistical feat by modern standards, but in 1914 it was a bold act of imagination and a shot of adrenaline for a nation on edge. And, after the battle, the French treasury paid the fares. 

Most troops arrived at the Battle of the Marne in more usual ways, but the taxis mattered enormously as a symbol. Paris would not surrender quietly. Civilians and soldiers were bound together in the defense of the nation. Newspapers seized on the story, turning it into a legend of unity and ingenuity.
