The Sturmgeschutz III (StuG III) was a direct response for a call from German frontline commanders for a low silhouette mechanized assault gun based on experiences gained during the invasion of Poland. This model captures the first production (Ausf A) version of such a weapons based on the already existing Panzer III tank hull and armed with a short barrel 75mm cannon. This new "Sturmartillerie" was intended for use as a close-in infantry support and assault weapon against enemy bunkers, trenches and other fortifications. An entire series of assault and anti-tank weapons would evolve from the Sturmgeschutz concept, with each generation better armed and armored.
