About the StuG III Ausf. E/F:

The StuG III was an armoured, tracked gun that could accompany infantry and destroy bunkers, strongpoints, and anti-tank positions with direct fire. Its low silhouette, heavy frontal armour, and powerful 75mm gun enabled it to become one of Germany’s most effective armoured fighting vehicles. Unlike a tank, however, the StuG lacked a rotating turret, requiring the crew to turn the vehicle to engage targets outside the gun’s limited traverse.

Introduced in 1941, the Ausf. E represented the ultimate form of early-war StuGs focused on infantry support. It carried the short-barrelled 7.5cm StuK 37 L/24, which was effective with high-explosive ammunition against infantry and fortifications. And enlarged side compartments provided additional space for ammunition and radio equipment, making the Ausf. E particularly suitable as a command vehicle.

The next year, however, the Ausf. F transformed the StuG’s capabilities. This variant carried the long-barrelled 7.5cm StuK 40 L/43, later supplemented by the L/48, giving it dramatically improved armour penetration against heavy tanks. The Ausf. F helped transform the StuG from primarily an infantry-support weapon into an important tank destroyer.

The famed Grossdeutschland Panzer Regiment was among the first formations to receive the long-gunned StuG III Ausf. F. On the Eastern Front, these vehicles gave Grossdeutschland a mobile, low-profile weapon capable of supporting attacks while also defeating increasingly formidable Soviet armour.
