About the Sikorsky® CH-53E Super Stallion® – US Marines Heavy Lift Helicopter:

Under the whirling wingspan of seven mighty blades, the Sikorsky CH-53E Super Stallion carries material to the frontlines, evacuates soldiers and civilians from danger, and provides vital combat support. To fulfill the U.S. Navy’s and Marines’ heavy-lift cargo helicopter needs, the Super Stallion evolved from previous designs with the addition of another main rotor blade, canting the tail rotors 20 degrees, and adding a third powerful engine.

The CH-53E made its operational debut in 1981 and has engaged in notable deployments. In the 1980s, Super Stallions transported Marines and provided combat support when the barracks were bombed in Beirut, Lebanon. In the 1990s, the heavy-lift helicopters evacuated civilians from the embassy in Mogadishu when the Somali Civil War began and, later, from the embassy in Albania when violence erupted. In 2001, Super Stallions enabled the longest amphibious assault in history when the helicopters delivered Marines far inland in Afghanistan to establish the first military base in the U.S. war in Afghanistan.
