About this model:

While the Sherman tends to get lambasted and made fun of in the European Theater, it was a completely different story in the Pacific. The tanks of the Imperial Japanese Army weren’t bad for their original purposes, but were not great when it came to tank on tank fighting. And when it was against a Sherman? It wasn’t even funny how much the Sherman outclassed the likes of the Ha-Go and Chi-Ha. Obviously it wasn’t that simple, but the Sherman clearly had the upper hand in the Pacific. The Marine’s favorite version of the Sherman was the M4A2. The M4A2 used a Diesel engine unlike the other engines, but was visually the exact same as the M4A3 (apart from the engine and engine deck).

By Iwo Jima, the Marines were basically ordered to use M4A3s going forward since the M4A2 stopped being produced by that point. Some crews stubbornly kept onto their M4A2s as long as they could (or weren’t given an M4A3, cases vary). This build is based off of an M4A2 that waded through the beaches of Iwo Jima to support the Marines storming it. While all Shermans have different types of wading vents, they tend to have a distinct “boxy” shape to them. This Sherman, and a few others from Iwo Jima had a distinct “Oil Drum” appearance. Most likely because these funnels were improvised before the battle. Still though, it’s a striking look.
