About the SdKfz 250 Half Track:

Carrying a weapon far more potent than its size suggested, the Sd.Kfz. 250/11 was one of the more distinctive variants of Germany’s versatile light halftrack. The Sd.Kfz. 250 family of halftracks was designed to give German mechanised formations a compact armoured vehicle capable of keeping pace with tanks during rapid advances. The standard chassis was adapted for reconnaissance, command, communications, fire-support, and myriad other duties. Its mobility and small size made it particularly valuable to reconnaissance units, although its thin armour and open fighting compartment offered limited protection.

The Sd.Kfz. 250/11 was a specialised fire-support and anti-armour variant. Its principal weapon was the unusual 2.8 cm schwere Panzerbüchse 41, a taper-bore gun that fired a tungsten-cored projectile at high velocity. At short ranges it could penetrate substantial armour, giving reconnaissance troops a useful defence against enemy armoured vehicles. However, its effectiveness declined with range and shortages of tungsten ammunition restricted its usefulness as the war dragged on.

The Grossdeutschland Panzer Regiment employed Sd.Kfz. 250/11s on the Eastern Front, where their combination of speed, cross-country mobility, and short-range firepower complemented the regiment’s tanks and other armoured vehicles. They accompanied reconnaissance and headquarters elements and, in this role, the 250/11 represented the German practice of adapting a proven armoured chassis to meet specialised battlefield requirements.
