About the Sdkfz 124. Wespe (Late War) - German WWII Mobile Artillery:

The German Sd.Kfz 124 “Wespe” stung like its namesake wasp. Combining the powerful 105mm howitzer with the reliable Panzer II chassis, the Wespe proved one of Germany’s most effective mobile artillery vehicles of the Second World War. Introduced in 1943, the Wespe gave German armored divisions fast-moving artillery support that could keep pace with the advancing tanks.

The Wespe fought primarily on the Eastern Front, where the mobile artillery was invaluable across the vast open battlefields. On the Western Fronts, the Wespe provided effective artillery support in defense of the valleys of Italy and the hedgerows of Normandy. Rather than engaging enemy tanks, the Wespe maneuvered behind the front lines and bombarded enemy troop concentrations and artillery positions. But, like tank destroyers, the Wespe’s mobility allowed it to fire several rounds and relocate before enemy forces could return fire effectively. 

Many Wespes sported “ambush camouflage,” which Germany introduced late in the war. Featuring dark yellow paint covered with green and red-brown patches and small contrasting spots, the pattern mimicked sunlight filtering through trees and bushes. Particularly in the wooded areas of France and Eastern Europe, this camouflage made the vehicle much harder for enemy aircraft and scouts to detect, increasing its chances of survival on dangerous battlefields.
