About the Sdkfz 124. Wespe – German WWII Self-Propelled Gun:

The Sd.Kfz. 124 Wespe represented another Second World War innovation in which Germany combined two outdated or imperfect pieces of equipment to create an effective and modern weapon. The Panzer II, although featuring a reliable chassis, was too small and light for the developing war. And the expanse of the Soviet Union displayed the inadequacy of the horse-drawn, but otherwise effective, 10.5cm field howitzer. Mounting the heavy gun on the dependable chassis, the Wespe entered combat in 1943 on the Eastern Front and immediately proved successful.

Earning the nickname ‘wasp,’ the Wespe was small, mobile, and armed with a deadly stinger. Smaller and more maneuverable than Allied self-propelled guns and often comprising the artillery complement of armored units, the Wespe gave Panzer divisions valuable high caliber artillery without limiting their range. Produced until Soviet forces overran the factory in 1944, the Wespe served across Europe from Kursk to Normandy.
