About the Sd.Kfz. 232 (8 Rad) - WWII German Heavy Armored Car

 Charging over the sands of North Africa, Germany’s heavy armored reconnaissance vehicles ably performed the traditional cavalry role, scouting ahead of the army, screening the flanks, and harassing enemy advances or supply columns. These versatile vehicles had eight-wheels, earning them the designation ‘8-rad,’ with independent steering on each wheel, providing dependability over rough terrain. The 8-rads also had drivers facing both forward and backward, allowing them to reverse direction quickly upon sighting a more powerful enemy. In the hexagonal turret, they had a 2 cm autocannon, the same armament used on the Panzer II tank, and an MG34 machinegun.

Major Hans Von Luck, commander of the 21st Panzer Division’s 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, praised the 8-rads as the best scouting vehicles in Erwin Rommel’s Deutsche Afrika Korps. They were nimble, fast, and sufficiently armored to scour the southern reaches of the desert battlefield to detect Allied threats. They came in many variants, boasting heavier firepower or powerful communications equipment. The Sd.Kfz 232 carried a medium range radio set and a distinctive large frame antennae, making it a vital reconnaissance tool in the vast expanses of the North African desert.
