About the Quarter Ton Truck with Canvas – Scout Car:

As warfare advanced into the 20th century, the mechanization of the battlefield also progressed. The horse and cart, used for centuries to move men and supplies across the landscape, were now replaced by four-wheel drive trucks that moved millions of tons of gear, supplies, and men across North Africa, Europe, and the Pacific islands to help the Allied cause in World War II. Of all the vehicles used during the war, none were as synonymous with the war than the Quarter Ton 4x4 Truck. The quarter ton truck was as essential to the war effort as was the GI’s M1 Garand that U.S Army Chief of Staff General George C. Marshall stated was “America’s greatest contribution to modern warfare.” High praise for such a simple truck.

Used in many roles, often as creative as the imagination of its users, the quarter ton truck moved supplies and small artillery pieces, carried troops past enemy lines, performed scouting and reconnaissance duties, and carried the most esteemed officers as they traversed the battlefield. The trucks could be outfitted with .30 or .50 caliber Browning machine guns or use optional canvas tops if weather was adverse. Like the Huey of the Vietnam War, or the HUMVEE of the Gulf War, the Quarter Ton Truck epitomized the toughness and resiliency of the troops that relied on it.
