About the BKM490 QF 4.5" Howitzer:

The QF 4.5 Howitzer was the standard light field howitzer of the British Empire during the First World War. Building on lessons from the Second Boer War, the QF 4.5 replaced the older BL 5 Howitzer and entered service in 1910. The gun’s effectiveness meant it not only served throughout the First World War, but also into the early days of the Second World War. 

Designated “QF” for “Quick Firing,” the gun featured innovations that enabled the QF 4.5 to fire quickly and effectively. Brass cartridge cases improved loading efficiency, and the horizontal sliding-block breech and hydro-spring recoil system improved firing speed and accuracy. As a result, the gun could fire 4 rounds per minute, hurling the 35-pound shell at ranges of 6,800–7,300 yards. And, the gun’s variable recoil mechanism reduced recoil length at high elevations and prevented the breech from striking the ground. This allowed the 6-man crew to use their weapon effectively in indirect fire roles against enemy trenches, strongpoints, and troop concentrations.

The QF 4.5 Howitzer equipped a quarter of British field artillery units and fired millions of rounds on the Western Front, in addition to its use by Russian forces and across the British Empire. Eventually superseded by more modern artillery, the QF 4.5’s reliability and effectiveness made it one of Britain’s most successful field howitzers of the era.
