About the Panzer IV Ausf. F1 WWII German Medium Tank:
In 1941, the Deutsche Afrika Korps (DAK) arrived in North Africa, bringing with it the fearsome weapons that conquered Europe. Quickly, the DAK would become legendary, driving across the vast desert in what seemed like the unencumbered ideal of the mobile armored warfare that emerged in the Second World War. Spurred on by the famed Desert Fox, Erwin Rommel, the DAK’s armored columns were led by Germany’s primary medium tank of the Second World War and the backbone of Germany’s armored force: the Panzer IV. The only German tank to remain in continuous production from the invasion of Poland to war’s end, the Panzer IV was designed originally as a support tank, to complement the lighter Panzer III and engage enemy strong points with its powerful 75mm gun. However, the Panzer IV evolved into Germany’s principal battle tank and served on every major front.
Introduced in April 1941, the Ausf. F1 variant was the final development of the Panzer IV’s early war design. Weighing over 22 tons, it carried 50mm of frontal armor, significantly more than prior variants, and featured the short-barreled 75mm KwK 37 L/24 gun, which fired high-explosive shells designed to smash fortifications and suppress gun crews. This gun limited the tank’s effectiveness against the heaviest enemy tanks, but it was an excellent infantry support weapon.
The Panzer IV Ausf. F1 gained a strong reputation with the DAK in North Africa, where it provided fire support in operations in Libya and Egypt such as the battles of Gazala and Tobruk. While the desert terrain tempted long-range gunnery, the Ausf. F1’s powerful high-explosive rounds menaced anti-tank positions and defensive strongpoints. Highly effective against lighter tanks such as the Crusader, it nonetheless was more limited against the better-armored Matildas. Still, the Panzer IV Ausf. F1 was one the DAK’s most valuable armored vehicles, combining reliability, protection, and versatility.
