About the Panzer 35(t) [with alternative Czechoslovakian and Romanian roundels]:

Although remembered as a mechanized juggernaut, the German military of the Second World War was plagued by war materiel shortages and scavenged at home and abroad for sources of vehicles and weapons. The Panzer 35(t) illustrates the necessary opportunism of the German armed forces even in the early days of the war. Originally designed by Czechoslovakia, the tank was adopted by Germany after the occupation in 1939 and redesignated Panzerkampfwagen 35(t): the “(t)” stood for “tschechisch,” or “Czech.” It weighed over 10 tons, and its 120-horsepower Skoda engine gave a top speed of around 34 km/h. Its riveted armor provided protection against small arms fire and light anti-tank rounds. The tank was advanced for the 1930s, but it was already on the verge of obsolescence when war in Europe began.

The Panzer 35(t) charged into the Soviet Union with German troops during Operation Barbarossa in summer 1941. Serving primarily with the 6th Panzer Division, these tanks joined the rapid advances deep into enemy territory, and its 37mm gun and two machine guns proved effective against the light tanks encountered early in the invasion. However, it soon struggled against heavier Soviet tanks such as the T-34 and KV-1. Furthermore, the vast distances to travel took their toll on the tank and exposed mechanical weaknesses. Nonetheless, the Panzer 35(t) contributed significantly to Germany’s early successes. Although eventually outclassed and withdrawn from frontline service, it helped fill critical shortages in the early campaigns of the war, and it demonstrated the immense value of captured equipment in supporting Germany’s most dramatic advances.
