About the P-47D Thunderbolt - WWII American Fighter-Bomber:

The Republic P-47D Thunderbolt was one of the most formidable fighters of the Second World War. Known affectionately as the “Jug,” this muscular aircraft was powered by the massive Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engine and combined sheer power with rugged durability. Capable of exceeding 430 mph and armed with eight .50-caliber machine guns, it was equally lethal in air-to-air combat and ground-attack missions. Early in the war, Thunderbolts escorted bombers deep into enemy territory, then they picked up drop tanks and bombs and became devastating close-support aircraft, strafing trains, tanks, and convoys almost with impunity. The P-47’s thick armor and robust airframe earned it the respect of its pilots, as it could return home riddled with holes that would have doomed a lighter aircraft.nd Porsche were the final contenders for the Tiger II design with Henschel officially winning and subsequently producing all Tiger IIs.

"Daddy Rabbit"

Flying the P-47 in the European Theater, the 391st Fighter Squadron flew from forward airfields in France and Belgium and provided relentless support for advancing Allied forces after D-Day. The Squadron’s P-47s were aggressive and precise at low altitude, attacking enemy armor and transport under heavy fire. Captain Neil Stanley and his P-47D embodied the spirit of both the Squadron and of the Thunderbolt. Nicknamed “Daddy Rabbit,” his P-47D was emblazoned with nose art and battle scars as it struck deep behind enemy lines to attack tanks, transports, aircraft, and even trains.
