About the Ordnance QF 13 Pounder Field Gun
The QF 13 Pounder was a lightweight, rapid-fire artillery piece designed to support British Royal Cavalry units and was operated by the Royal Horse Artillery (RHA). The designation QF stands for "Quick Firing," which means the gun used a hydro-pneumatic recoil system to return itself to battery, and thus could be fired as fast as the next shell was loaded. 13 Pounder is the weight of the 3" diameter shell, which gave a reasonable amount of explosive power for a relatively lightweight shell and gun. The QF 13 Pounder was designed in parallel with the larger QF 18 Pounder used by Royal Artillery. During World War I, the Ordnance QF 13 Pounder was the principle afield gun used by the Royal Horse Artillery. While cavalry didn't play a huge role in a conflict dominated by static trench warfare, the QF 13 Pounder did provide outstanding support when it was called into action.
