About the Opel Blitz Fuel Truck:

In the Second World War, Germany’s war of movement and conquest of Europe, and the Allies’ global response, depending on fleets of trucks and other logistics vehicles. Against that backdrop, the Opel Blitz was a workhorse of the German army. Built by the company Opel, the Blitz was a reliable and ubiquitous 3-ton truck used to transport troops, ammunition, food, and supplies across Europe and North Africa. The name, Blitz, or Lightning, reflected the designs for fast-moving offenses and Germany’s rapid advances of the early years of the war. 

The rugged and simple truck came in several variants, but an especially vital version was the fuel tanker. Equipped with a large cylindrical fuel tank atop the rear chassis, the Opel Blitz carried the lifeblood of the fast-moving mechanized forces. In the deserts of North Africa, this job was critical, as advances depended on extremely long and overstretched supply lines and battles were fought over great expanses between mobile armies. The North African theater stripped war to the movement of men and battles of tanks, artillery, aircraft, and logistics. All these depended on the vital fuel carried in the Opel Blitz fuel truck. 

For Erwin Rommel and his famous Afrika Korps, fuel often determined success or failure. German forces could win tactical victories yet still be forced to halt because supplies could not keep up across hundreds of miles of scorching desert. Opel Blitz fuel trucks rumbled through sandstorms and extreme heat, delivering sustenance to stranded tanks and advancing columns. Without fuel, the desert war simply stopped moving.
