About the Messerschmitt Bf 109E-7/Trop – German WWII Fighter Aircraft:

The Bayerische Flugzeugwerke or Bavarian Aircraft Company and engineer Willy Messerschmitt was the manufacturer and developer of Germany’s most recognizable fighter craft, the Bf-109. A winner of a solicitation by the German Air Command to replace the older Heinkel He 51, the Bf-109 flew past its competitors. Officially hitting production in 1935, the Bf-109 was the biggest rival to the British Royal Air Force fleet of Spitfires and Hurricanes—ironically, early models of the German fighter used Rolls-Royce Kestrel engines before switching to the German built Jumo 210A and later the Daimler-Benz DB 600 series engine. The Bf-109 flooded the ranks of the German Luftwaffe becoming one of the most prolific airplanes built during the war with more than 33,000 produced, second only to the Soviet Sturmovik. However, by the start of hostilities, the single-seat monoplane was outdated. Already, British fighters were more advanced, the only difference was experience. The Bf-109 proved its worth during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) and as Germany swept across Europe, the Luftwaffe claimed dominance in the air, thwarting opponents. That continued during the early stages of the Battle of Britain and only waned due to the ignorance of Hitler as the Royal Air Force (RAF) rebuilt and learned new strategies to deal with the pesky German fighters. Overall, the Bf-109 was well built and well-armed for its time. The Bf-109 was outfitted with various combinations of weapons throughout the war, but usually centered around 7.9mm MG17 machine guns mounted in the wings and/or in the fuselage. Later models added 20mm cannons or 13mm MG131 machine guns.

The Bf-109 fought everywhere Germany and its allies fought. This included the harsh environment of North Africa. As Italy was losing its foothold on its former Roman Territories, Germany intervened to aid and even supplant its ally. Luftwaffe air wing JG 27, nicknamed Afrika, was sent to North Africa to provide fighter protection to Rommel and his Afrika Corp. Upon arrival, the Bf-109 underwent a transformation to better perform in the desert and to blend in with the horizon. With combinations of dark tan and dark orange along with light grey and the common place yellow intake underneath the nose, the Tropic version of the Bf-109 was very distinctive. Additionally, sand filters were attached to the turbo charger intake, so the engine did not clog. To offer shade for the pilot, mounts were added to either side of the fuselage to attach sun umbrellas. The Bf-109 proved to be an exceptional fighter, however, Allied advancement in aviation coupled with targeted bombing of manufacturing ultimately foiled Germany’s air superiority.
