Leaving France in 1777 at the age of 19 to join in the American Revolution, Marquis de Lafayette was chosen to command the Continental forces in Virginia in 1781 and was one of three commanders at the Siege of Yorktown. In 1824, Lafayette returned to the United States for a year long tour and it was reported that he was met by "demonstrations of frenzied enthusiasm without precedent or parallel in American history."
