About the Marder III Ausf. H - Sd.Kfz. 138 - WWII German Tank Destroyer:

Germany’s Marder III was an ingenious and effective improvisation during the Second World War. Born of necessity and forged from captured equipment, the Marder III was built upon the reliable chassis of the Czech Panzer 38(t) and mounted a captured Soviet 76.2 mm gun or the German 7.5 cm Pak 40. Debuting in 1942, the Marder III provided a counterpunch to the powerful menace of Soviet T-34s and KV-1s, which had rendered many German guns obsolete. On the open steppes of the Eastern Front, Marders struck hard from ambush positions before relocating to avoid counterattack. Crews admired its mobility and punch, but they also knew its limits, as its thin, open-topped armor offered almost no protection from artillery, small arms, or the harsh Russian winter.

The Ausf. H variant retained the Panzer 38(t)’s engine at the rear and the fighting compartment mid-mounted, which provided a balanced profile and enabled crew efficiency. Carrying an upgunned Pak 40, it could destroy Allied Shermans and T-34s from impressive ranges. Still, its tall silhouette and exposed crew compartment made it a vulnerable target in prolonged engagements. Nevertheless, the Ausf. H proved effective and important, as it bought valuable time until heavier tank destroyers like the Jagdpanzer could reach the battlefield. The Marder III’s blend of improvisation and lethality epitomized Germany’s wartime adaptability, as well as its desperation.
