About the Marder II "Kohlenklau" – WWII German Self Propelled Anti-Tank Gun:

The Marder II showcased Germany’s ability to adapt throughout the rapidly modernizing war. The Panzer II’s small 2cm autocannon was outclassed, but its chassis remained reliable; and the Pak 40 anti-tank gun was powerful, but too heavy to move without artillery tractors. To employ these strengths and negate these weakness, the Marder II mounted the hard-hitting Pak 40 onto the reliable Panzer II chassis. The tall, open superstructure offered a large target for enemy gunners and exposed the crew to fire in close fighting, but given the right support, the Marder II was an effective tank destroyer. About 850 Marder IIs were built, serving predominantly on the Eastern Front.

A particularly successful Marder II was the “Coal Thief,” named for “Kohlenklau,” a popular German cartoon character used in campaigns encouraging energy conservation for the war effort. The “Coal Thief,” its armor adorned with the cartoon, was featured in propaganda photographs with its proud commander, Helmut Kohlke, after claiming 19 victories on the Eastern Front.
