About the M561 Gama Goat - 6×6 Cargo vehicle

The Gama Goat was a six wheeled all-terrain cargo vehicle developed for the US Army following lessons learned in the Vietnam War The Gama Goat (named after inventor Roger Gamaunt) was designed to go anywhere, just like the animal goat. The six wheeled vehicle was built around an articulated, which enabled all six wheels to make ground contact under even the most extreme terrain. The Gama Goat's aluminum body was sealed like a boat, allowing the vehicle to float in water, and could be nominally propelled by by its wheels on the surface. The 1980s was they heyday of the Gama Goat, with over 14,000 vehicles supplied to the US Army and Marines, often modified for various roles. While its off road performance was considered excellent, it was difficult to operate and maintain. The need for easier-to-maintain and more operator friendly vehicles, meant the Gama Goat would be phased out in favor of traditional four and six wheel vehicles like the HMMWV, CUCW and LMTV.
