About the M4A3 Sherman - WWII US Army Medium Tank:
Perhaps the best-known Allied tank during World War II, the M4 Sherman was created to replace the M3 Lee. Named for the eccentric Union General William T. Sherman, the Sherman medium tank was mass produced to help offset better-armed German tanks such as the Tiger and Panther. The American war machine produced over 50,000 Sherman tanks between 1941 and 1945.
The first hull type to take the HVSS suspension system into combat, the M4A3 Sherman became the preferred US Army version in both the 75mm and 76mm version of the tank. The first run of M4A3 tanks were small hatch tanks mostly used in the USA for training. However, some were sent to Europe to help make up for higher than expected tank losses after the Normandy Campaign. Perhaps the rarest version of the Sherman in Europe, they are still common around the Midwest US as monument tanks.
