About the M43 Ambulance - 3/4 Ton 4x4 Military Truck:

The M43 Ambulance demonstrated how thoughtful vehicle design directly influenced survival on the battlefield. It was born of one of the most rugged light trucks of the Cold War era: the Dodge M37. This 3/4-ton, four-wheel-drive truck was designed for durability, simplicity, and off-road competence, and it delivered powerful torque rather than speed. Its high ground clearance, strong axles, and leaf-spring suspension made it reliable even over rough terrain. These traits made it well-suited for use as an ambulance. 

Configured as the M43 ambulance, the M37’s cargo bed was replaced with an enclosed and insulated body capable of carrying litters and seated patients. Built-in racks, compartments, and a heater kept the ambulance ready to support urgent care in tough conditions.

During the Vietnam War, the M43 Ambulance operated in the jungle humidity, monsoon rains, and primitive roads. Although pushed to the limits, the M43 was aided by its mechanical simplicity; basic field repairs kept the ambulances running far from established supply lines. While helicopters took on an increasing role in medical evacuation, the M43 Ambulance remained the essential backbone for transporting wounded troops to aid stations and field hospitals
