About the M3A1 Half Track - WWII Allied APC:

Tracks bit into the dirt and wheels threw up clouds of dust, and the M3 half-track sped forward to become one of the most recognizable American vehicles of the Second World War. Although lacking the armour and firepower of a tank, its combination of mobility, carrying capacity, and versatility made it an essential battlefield workhorse.

Entering production in 1941, the M3’s conventional front wheels and tracked rear suspension allowed it to travel over rough terrain while remaining relatively simple to operate. Its open-topped troop compartment normally carried a crew and infantry squad, while a .50-cal machine gun provided defensive firepower. Numerous variants served as command vehicles, ambulances, gun carriers, and mortar carriers.

The M3 was particularly important to U.S. armored infantry: the half-tracks provided the necessary speed and mobility to keep pace with the advancing armor while also offering protection against small-arms fire and shell fragments. The armored infantry usually dismounted before attacking, so the M3s served as protected battlefield transport that could provide machine-gun fire, move ammunition and equipment, or reposition troops as the battle developed. In North Africa, Italy, France, Belgium, and Germany, M3s helped tanks and infantry operate as a combined-arms team and gave U.S. armored infantry the mobility necessary for mechanized warfare.
