About the M3 Stuart Mk1 Honey:

Fast, reliable, and surprisingly tough, the M3 Stuart Mk. 1 became one of the most popular light tanks used by Commonwealth forces in the North African desert. When the American-built Stuart arrived in Egypt in 1941, British tank crews appreciated its speed, smooth handling, and mechanical reliability. Compared with the temperamental tanks to which they were accustomed, the Stuart was such a smooth ride that crews nicknamed it the “Honey.”

The Honey soon joined the legendary 7th Armoured Division, equipping the 4th Armoured Brigade’s 3rd and 5th Royal Tank Regiments and 8th King’s Hussars, and charged with the Desert Rats into action during Operation Crusader in November 1941. Initially, its 37mm main gun could knock out lighter enemy vehicles and early German tanks, while its Browning machine guns gave it plenty of firepower against infantry and soft-skinned targets. However, the Honey’s armour was relatively thin, and its small gun struggled as heavier German tanks appeared. Nevertheless, the Honey’s speed was valuable and, as its usefulness as a frontline battle tank declined, Commonwealth forces increasingly employed it for reconnaissance, scouting, and screening. The Honey was fast, dependable, and loved by its crews. In North Africa, the little American tank earned a British nickname and a reputation for speed, reliability, and versatility.
