About the M26A1 Pershing - Korean War US Marines Heavy Tank:

The M26A1 Pershing was one of America’s most formidable heavy tanks of the late Second World War and early Cold War era. Designed to counter heavily armored German panzers, it was an evolution of the ubiquitous Sherman and carried a more powerful 90mm M3 gun that allowed it to take on heavy tanks at range. The M26A1 variant introduced a muzzle brake that reduced recoil and improved firing control, enabling better accuracy and sustained firing. However, design and production delays meant the M26 Pershings arrived in Europe only in the closing months of the Second World War. Nevertheless, the M26 served with distinction only a few years later in the Korean War.

At the Battle of Chosin Reservoir, U.S. Marines and U.N. forces were surrounded by a vast Chinese army as temperatures plunged to nearly –30°F. Here, the M26 Pershings battled both overwhelming infantry and the bitter cold. They fought not tanks but infantry, as waves washed over and around them; and the cold froze lubricants, cracked metal, and strained the engines. But the Pershings proved invaluable, serving as mobile bunkers and blasting strongpoints, interrupting enemy attacks with bow and coaxial machine-guns, and providing respite and protection to exhausted and freezing Marines. The Pershings were plagued with underpowered engines and struggled on the icy and narrow roads, but they became symbols of the stubborn resistance at Chosin Reservoir and helped the encircled forces breakout to the sea.
