About the M1937 45 mm Anti-Tank Gun:

The M1937 aka "53-K" was an improved version of the M1932 Anti-Tank gun "K-19", whose lineage in turn can be traced back to a licensed copy of Germany's 37mm Pak 36 anti-tank gun. Aside from the larger diameter ammunition, improvements to the M1937 include a semi-automatic breech block, plus additional updates in the gun sight, firing trigger, chassis suspension, gun shield, and more. The M1937 saw extensive actions in the early days of the war on the Eastern Front. It would soon be replaced by a longer-barrel version for improved armor penetration (M1942).

These compact guns were produced throughout World War II and were valued for their small size, relative low production cost, and ease of concealment. While useless against later German giants like the Tiger and Panther, they could easily defeat most German armor at the outset of Operation Barbarossa. They would continue to be effective against more lightly armored vehicles throughout the war, and would continue to be produced until 1945, in tandem to the larger and more powerful 57mm Zis-2 anti-tank gun and 76mm Zis-3 divisional field gun.

Although largely retired shortly after World War II, a longer barrel M1942 was destroyed in 2025 by Ukrainian drone operators while being towed behind a Russian military truck in the Kursk region.
