About the M18 Hellcat - WWII US Tank Destroyer:

M18 Hellcat earned a fearsome reputation as the U.S. Army’s fastest tank destroyer. Designed for speed and agility, this sleek predator of the battlefield could reach up to 55 mph, a blistering pace that made it the fastest tracked armored vehicle of World War II.

Entering service in 1944, the M18 Hellcat was the ultimate embodiment of American tank destroyer doctrine in the war. Unlike heavily armored tanks like the Sherman, the Hellcat was lightly armored, with armor only up to 25 mm thick, and it was much lighter than its tank destroyer forerunners, like the M10 and M36, which used the heavy Sherman chassis. Yet the M18 mounted a powerful 76mm gun, capable of piercing heavy German tanks. The open-topped turret favored visibility at the cost of crew protection, but the M18 was designed to hit hard and move fast, relying on speed and surprise.

The M18 was used predominantly in the European Theater, where it distinguished itself as an effective tank hunter. During the Battle of the Bulge, Hellcats ambushed the enemy and relocated, disrupting German advances and defending key positions like Bastogne and St. Vith. Though vulnerable to return fire, its hit-and-run tactics proved deadly and effective. In a notable action, four M18 Hellcats aided Combat Team Desobry’s defense of Noville and Foy, destroying around 30 German tanks and inflicted heavy casualties on the 2nd Panzer Division. Their hit-and-run tactics and effective defense bought crucial time for the 101st Airborne to strengthen Bastogne’s defenses.
