About the LRDG F30 CMP - Long Range Desert Group Heavy Gun Truck:

Roaring across the North African desert, the Ford F30 CMP was more than a supply vehicle: it was a hardened instrument of long-range warfare and a lifeline in one of the harshest battlefields of World War II. Built in Canada as part of the Canadian Military Pattern (CMP) series and designed for durability, the F30 featured a robust chassis and high ground clearance suited to rough terrain. However, when adopted by the Long Range Desert Group (LRDG), the truck underwent significant modification. Crews stripped away body panels, doors, and roofs to reduce weight and improve airflow in extreme heat, while adding racks for fuel, water, and spare tires. They added a variety of weaponry, turning each vehicle into a fast-moving raider capable of striking far behind enemy lines. Some F30s carried captured Breda 35/20 cannons, giving these already versatile vehicles a potent punch against both ground targets and low-flying aircraft.

Under the hood roared a Ford V8, but the desert was unforgiving. The F30’s four-wheel-drive system gave it excellent mobility over sand, yet it came at a cost: heavy fuel consumption limited its range and forced crews to carry vast quantities of fuel. Nevertheless, the F30 played a crucial transitional role. Introduced to replace worn-out Chevrolet trucks, it kept LRDG patrols operational until more efficient vehicles arrived. Even after being officially replaced, it returned to service when other vehicles ran short.
In the sands of North Africa, the F30 embodied ingenuity, resilience, and improvisation, and this otherwise standard military truck became a legendary desert war machine. LRDG patrols relied on these trucks to navigate hundreds of miles. Engines strained, sand clogged gears, and fuel consumption was notoriously high, but the missions pressed on. Under cover of night, these modified trucks slipped past enemy positions, striking airfields and supply lines before vanishing again into the dunes. With weapons like the Breda mounted on their decks, these raiders carried not just mobility but real striking power. In those moments, the F30 was not just transport, but a silent partner in some of the most audacious operations of the war.
