About the Ju 87R-2 – ‘Snake’ Stuka:

The “Snake Stuka” is perhaps one of the most striking examples of one of the most emblematic vehicles of the Second World War. The famed Stuka, the Ju-87, was a precision dive bomber that plunged nearly vertically before dropping its bombs with deadly accuracy just above its target. It struck fear into its enemies, spearheading the German advances across Poland, France, the Balkans, and North Africa as their screaming sirens — the infamous ‘Jericho Trumpets’ — spread panic among enemy troops long before the bombs struck.

As the war spread across Europe and the Mediterranean, extending the range of aircraft became vital. The R-2 variant of the Stuka carried internal fuel tanks in the inner wings and two drop tanks in place of the bomb racks, which more than doubled its range. Apart from additional fuel capacity, the R-2 removed the Jericho Trumpet sirens. Destined for North Africa and the Mediterranean, some Stukas were tropicalized, fitted with a dust filter and carrying survival gear in the wings. In North Africa and across the Mediterranean, airpower was essential. Vast deserts and long supply lines meant armies depended heavily on aircraft for reconnaissance, protection, and attack. Stukas targeted tanks, artillery positions, ports, and especially Allied shipping crossing the Mediterranean Sea. 

The ‘Snake Stuka’ was a Ju-87R-2 belonging to 6./St.G 2, or the 6th Staffel of Sturzkampfgeschwader 2, the Luftwaffe dive-bomber wing nicknamed “Immelmann” after the World War I ace. Transferred to Libya in mid-February 1941 and stationed on the coast at Tmimi, west of Tobruk, this experienced unit carried out relentless attacks on Allied positions, shipping, and supply routes. Marked T6 DP, the ‘Snake Stuka’ likely was piloted by Hubert Pölz, who gave his Stuka an intimidating appearance perfectly suited to the psychological warfare for which the Stuka became famous.
