About the Jagdtiger - WWII German Heavy Tank Destroyer:
The Jagdtiger was rare but mighty. Germany built fewer than 100 of the armored behemoths, which were the heaviest armored fighting vehicles used in the Second World War and carried one of the most powerful guns ever installed on a vehicle. Designated the Panzerjager Tiger Ausf. B and built on the already-massive Tiger II chassis, the Jagdtiger began production in 1944 and only reached the battlefield near the end of the war. Designed as a tank destroyer, it carried a formidable 12.8 cm PaK 44 L/55 gun, which could destroy Allied tanks from over 2,000 meters. In addition, the tank destroyer had exceedingly thick frontal armor, as much as 25cm on the casemate, which made it nearly impervious to enemy fire. However, its rarity and its mightiness were related: it proved too costly and complicated for significant production, and it suffered battlefield breakdowns. Its immense weight of around 72 tons caused mechanical problems, and more Jagdtigers were lost to breakdowns or fuel shortages than to enemy action.
Nevertheless, the Jagdtiger proved lethal in the hands of experienced crews. Otto Carius was already a highly decorated tank ace, commanding Tiger I tanks on the Eastern Front and credited with destroying more than 150 enemy tanks, when he joined schwere Panzerjäger-Abteilung 512, a unit equipped with Jagdtigers. In early 1945, he commanded the 2nd Company and participated in defensive operations against advancing Allied forces in western Germany. Although the Jagdtiger's powerful gun allowed it to engage enemy armor at long range, Carius criticized the vehicle’s mechanical unreliability and excessive weight. Still, he recognized its tremendous firepower and protective armor. Carius described both the strengths and limitations of the Jagdtiger, providing valuable firsthand insight into the operation of Germany’s largest armored fighting vehicle.
