About the IJA Antitank Gun Casemate - WWII Japanese Defensive Emplacement:

In the Second World War, the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) became masters of defensive fortification, especially across the Pacific's scattered islands as the Allies' island-hopping advance moved toward the Japanese homeland. While some islands became warrens of massive underground tunnels and complexes, small, discrete, and hidden bunkers formed the backbone of island defenses. Typically compact and low profile, these positions were dug into hillsides, hidden in jungle foliage, and built of earth, logs, and concrete when possible. Their size, camouflage, and construction made them difficult to spot and harder to destroy. The soldiers inside covered beaches, trails, and landing zones, catching Allied troops in deadly crossfires and forcing attackers into costly close-range combat. 

As the war progressed and the IJA's materials dwindled, they increasingly relied on small, log-reinforced bunkers, in some cases holding the 75mm mountain gun. The log bunkers were not simple: They were ingeniously constructed with thick timber beams and layered with packed earth to absorb blast impact, and they featured narrow firing ports for the weapons. The 75mm mountain gun was well-suited for these bunkers, as it was designed for mobility in tough terrain. The low and compact weapon peaked out of the firing port and, camouflaged and pre-sighted, threatened Allied troops, tanks, and landing craft as they came ashore. Although eventually overrun, these bunkers made every island assault a brutal struggle.
