About the Humber Armored Car Mk I:

The Humber Armoured Car introduced a new generation of British reconnaissance vehicles during the Second World War. Entering service in late 1941, the fast, rugged, and dependable Humber Armoured Cars proved invaluable tools for observing the enemy, reconnoitering the terrain, and maintaining communications between units, particularly in the vast desert of the North African campaign. With a crew of three, the Mk. 1 variant boasted a top speed of 45 mph, all-wheel drive that provided excellent cross-country mobility in desert conditions, and both heavy 15mm and coaxial 7.92mm Besa machine guns that gave it useful firepower against infantry, soft-skinned vehicles, and lightly armoured targets.

The Humber Mk. 1 debuted with the 11th Hussars (Prince Albert’s Own), one of the British Army’s most experienced armoured car regiments. A year before, as soon as war broke out in the desert, the 11th Hussars had crossed from Egypt into Italian Libya, deploying outdated armoured cars to harass and, in many cases, attack and defeat the enemy. Now equipped with a modern Humber Mk. 1, the 11th Hussars put their considerable expertise in long-range desert reconnaissance to even better use. The patrols operated ahead and on the flanks of British armoured formations, searched for enemy columns and defensive positions, identified routes and obstacles, maintained contact with opposing reconnaissance forces, and reported enemy movements by wireless.

The Humber Mk. 1’s combination of speed, wireless communications, all-wheel drive, and relatively compact dimensions allowed it to patrol large areas that would have been difficult to cover with heavier tracked vehicles. In the hands of experienced 11th Hussars crews, the Humber helped provide British commanders with the battlefield intelligence essential to mobile warfare in North Africa.
