About the Hawker Sea Fury - Naval Fighter-Bomber:

The Hawker Sea Fury was the British Royal Navy’s last propeller powered fighter. Though the last, it was Britain's fastest rendition yet. Britain’s Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm was impressed with the initial prototypes from Hawker and thus ordered 200 in 1944. Even though missing the war, the Sea Fury’s production continued, and it entered service in August of 1947. To create its impressive speeds, the Sea Fury was powered by a 2,480hp Bristol Centaurus 18, an 18-cylinder radial piston engine. The Sea Fury could reach speeds of 465 mph and had a ceiling of 36,000 ft. For armament, the Sea Fury used four 20mm cannons mounted on its wings, as well as the added underwing capability to carry bombs and rockets.

The Sea Fury saw action in the early 1950s conflict in Korea. Britain was part of a United Nations coalition that saw over 60,000 British troops involved in the conflict. Providing air cover and ground support, the Sea Fury was a marvel in the new “Jet Age.” The Sea Fury is credited with the kill of a MiG-15 jet fighter—one of the few prop planes to shoot down a jet powered fighter. In total, 864 Sea Furies were built. Production eventually ceased in 1953 as Hawker Sea Hawks replaced it.
