One of the few African-American units to see combat during the Great War, the Harlem "Hellfighters" were enlisted by the French to help reinforce their ranks. The "Hellfighter" name was given to the regiment by the Germans, who were impressed by their combat abilities. The regiment was awarded the Croix de Guerre by the French for their exceptional bravery in combat.
