About the Grumman® F6F-5 Hellcat® - WWII American Carrier-based Fighter-Bomber:
Ferociously patrolling the Pacific skies, the Grumman F6F Hellcat was one of the most successful carrier-based fighter planes of World War II. The Hellcat was rugged, durable, and heavily armed with six machine guns in addition to bombs and rockets. But it also boasted speed and power, with a top speed of around 380 mph. These attributes combined to make a formidable aerial combat fighter, and the Hellcat claimed 75% of all of the U.S. Navy’s aerial kills in the Pacific war.
As a carrier-based fighter, the Hellcat prioritized survivability, with heavy armor protection and self-sealing fuel tanks. Entering service in late 1943, the Hellcats immediately showed their worth, performing well against Japanese fighters. The Hellcat helped achieve air superiority in the Pacific Theater, particularly in battles such as the Battle of the Philippine Sea, where it decimated Japanese air power in an action quickly termed the the Marianas Turkey Shoot. Proving to be a workhorse of naval air power, the Hellcat ended the war with over 5,000 claimed victories, more than any other Allied naval aircraft.
