About the Engine 51 - Historic Los Angeles County Fire Truck:

Hurry to the truck, it’s an emergency! With its distinctive red-and-white paint scheme, commanding grille, and unmistakable vintage profile, the 1973 Ward LaFrance P-80 Ambassador is an icon of firefighting history, and even a pop culture legend. This fire truck became a symbol of courage and the teamwork that is required when lives are in danger.

The Ambassador packs a 250-horsepower Cummins diesel engine, delivering the muscle needed to move this substantial machine into action. Its rugged construction and no-nonsense cab design demonstrate that the truck and its crew are dependable workhorses, ready to answer the call day or night. Engine 51 carries a 500-gallon water tank and features a fire pump capable of gushing 1,000 gallons per minute. That pumping capacity helps supply the water firefighters need to attack blazes and protect lives and property.

Still, there is more to this classic than horsepower, chrome, and pumping power. Its familiar silhouette evokes the excitement of emergency responses, the crackle of radio calls, and the teamwork of a crew that operates as one. Today, the Ward LaFrance Ambassador’s legacy lives on among collectors, firefighters, enthusiasts who appreciate the engineering and dedication behind these remarkable machines, and those for whom this fire truck evokes memories of childhood.
