Dornier Do-17 Z - WWII German Light Bomber:
Designed as a schnellbomber, or fast bomber, the Dornier Do 17 prioritized speed and agility to attack its target and avoid enemy fighter defenses. Light and slender, the Do 17 became known as the “Flying Pencil.” While the prototype may have been built originally as a concept for a fast mail plane, the Do 17 was converted for war use through the 1930s. Popular with its crews, in part due to its surprising ability to fly well at low heights, enabling the bombers to escape prowling enemy fighters, the Do 17 debuted in the Spanish Civil War and was used extensively through the early years of the Second World War.
The most produced variant was the Dornier Do 17Z, which first flew in 1939 and featured a redesigned nose with an extended cockpit. The Do 17Z was powered by two Bramo 323 radial engines and could reach speeds of 255 mph, with a range of 715 miles. It carried a bomb load of 2,200 lbs, and it carried several 7.92 mm MG-15 machine guns for defense.
The Do 17Z played its most significant role during the Battle of Britain. However, it suffered heavy losses due to its relatively light defensive armament, and its limited payload made it difficult to justify the losses. The Do 17Z became increasingly obsolete and was gradually replaced by more capable aircraft like the Junkers Ju 88. But the Do 17Z remained in service throughout the war, often in auxiliary roles. The Flying Pencil is an example of Luftwaffe bomber design and innovation in the pre- and early wars years.
