About the Cobra King - M4A3E2 Jumbo of the 4th Armored Division:

Few tanks are as recognizable as the Sherman, and fewer still are as distinctive and famous as the Jumbo Sherman “King Cobra.”

In the Second World War, the M4 Sherman was the United States’ principal medium tank. Thousands were produced and they served in every theater. Carrying adequate armor and firepower, the Sherman was particularly valued for its reliability, mobility, and ease of production and maintenance. However, the improvement of German anti-tank weapons and the various needs of warfare meant that Shermans, in addition to being mass-produced, also needed upgrades and specialized variants. One such variant was the M4A3E2, built for assaulting heavily defended positions and, due to its increased size, nicknamed “Jumbo.” Its additional protection increased its weight considerably, but made it better suited to leading attacks through enemy defenses. Only 254 Jumbos were produced.

One of these rare tanks was Cobra King, a vehicle of Company C, 37th Tank Battalion, 4th Armored Division. In December 1944, as the Battle of the Bulge raged, the 101st Airborne and other American units were surrounded in the strategically important Belgian town of Bastogne, but the armor of General George Patton’s Third Army raced north to relieve them. Finally, on the day after Christmas, Cobra King, leading a group of American tanks, approached Bastogne. The tanks fought through German defenses and, late in the afternoon, linked up with the surrounded American defenders. This breakthrough opened a corridor into Bastogne and effectively ended the siege. Fighting continued, but the linkup was a crucial turning point in the battle.

Cobra King survived the war and was eventually preserved as a historic vehicle. After years of uncertainty about its identity, research and physical examination helped confirm that the restored tank was indeed Cobra King. Today, it serves as a reminder of the Sherman’s evolution from a mass-produced medium tank into specialized vehicles designed for demanding battlefield conditions.

Command the breakthrough with this custom Cobra King Jumbo—the legendary, first-in-Bastogne tank built to smash through limits (and look badass on your MOC)!
