About the CCKW Clubmobile - WWII Red Cross Mobile Canteen and Kitchen:

Famed conqueror Napoleon Bonaparte reportedly held that an army marches on its stomach. While a full stomach is critical for keeping an army on the move, the broader comforts of home also are vital to maintaining the morale of the far-away soldiers. In the Second World War, while troops could not yet come home, the western Allies relied on one of the most unusual and beloved vehicles on the battlefield to bring home to the troops. Devoid of armor or ammunition, the CCKW Clubmobile carried something just as important for soldiers fighting abroad: coffee, donuts, music, and a sense of comfort.

The Clubmobile was built on the sturdy GMC CCKW, the famous U.S. Army “Deuce and a Half” cargo truck with its 2½-ton carrying capacity. The American Red Cross converted the trucks into rolling snack bars and social centers. Inside the truck was a compact kitchen with a donut-making machine, coffee urns, and storage for thousands of cups and supplies.

Each Clubmobile was staffed by Red Cross women, the “Donut Dollies.” A single Clubmobile could produce thousands of donuts and serve thousands of troops in a single day, and many trucks also carried phonographs and records for the soldiers to enjoy. Clubmobiles operated across Britain, France, Belgium, and Germany, following Allied armies as they drove from Normany to Berlin. They appeared in muddy fields, bombed-out towns, and temporary camps, and they played a vital role in the war effort. For exhausted troops, a hot donut, a cup of coffee, and a friendly conversation could provide a powerful reminder of the home they were fighting to protect.
