About Carro Armato M13/40 - WWII Italian Medium Tank

Churning across the North African sands and charging British armored units, the Italian M13/40 medium tank embodied both the ambitions and limitations of Italian military efforts in the Second World War. Introduced in 1940 and sent to the North African theater to aid the Italian conquest of the Mediterranean coast, the M13/40 carried a 47mm main gun and boasted a strong diesel engine. Over 700 M13/40s were built, but they entered the battlefield piecemeal in hastily formed units. While they were a prominent feature of the early battles of the North African campaign, the medium tanks were outclassed by Allied technology and tactics.

The M13/40 suffered from thin armor, a cramped interior, and its lack of radio equipment, which severely compromised battlefield coordination and tactical flexibility, forcing Italian tank crews to rely on flags or prearranged signals. Although numerous, the M13/40s were battered during the British Operation Compass offensive. During the Battle of Beda Fomm, they made a valiant but unsuccessful effort to rescue encircled Italian troops. The destruction of six M13/40s by a single British 2-pounder gun exemplified the weakness of the Italian armor and tactics. Later in the campaign, the tank fought with mixed success during the Siege of Tobruk.

Despite its shortcomings, the M13/40 displayed Italy’s industrial efforts and ambition, the rapidly changing technology of armored warfare, and the mechanized nature of the North African campaign and Second World War.
