About the Bronekater Pr.1125 – WWII Soviet River Boat

A narrow warship slicing through shallow rivers under fire, its tank turret swinging toward and shelling the enemy: the Soviet Project 1125 Bronekater was a compact armored boat built to fight where larger warships could not.

Developed in the 1930s, the Project 1125 was purpose-built for river warfare. Its flat-bottomed hull drew just 0.6 meters of water, allowing it to operate close to riverbanks and in shallow channels. Displacing 27 tons and measuring 22 meters long, the Project 1125 was short and narrow enough to move by rail, which allowed the boats to be moved overland to follow the advance or redeployed between fronts quickly. Its primary weapon was a 76.2mm gun mounted in a T-28 or T-34 tank turret. Machine guns provided additional firepower, and some vessels carried Katyusha rocket launchers or mines.

During the Second World War, Project 1125 boats fought on the Volga, Dnieper, Don, and Danube rivers. They shelled enemy positions, supported infantry, transported troops, and helped launch amphibious assaults. They played a particularly important role during the Battle of Stalingrad, where their shallow draft and mobility allowed them to operate close to the fighting and helped the Red Army hold onto its small but tight grasp on the western riverbank. Small, maneuverable, and well-armed, the Project 1125 showed that a warship’s impact was not determined by its size.
